In this Sumerian myth, Ninlil follows her mother's instructions and becomes pregnant by the water of Enlil, leading to the birth of the moon-god Nanna. Enlil departs Nippur towards the netherworld, but Ninlil follows him. Disguising himself as the gatekeeper, Enlil refuses to reveal his location to Ninlil. Ninlil asserts her position as queen, and Enlil, still in disguise, impregnates her again, resulting in the birth of Meslamtaea, also known as Nergal, the king of the netherworld.
