How to ask somebody to repeat themselves in English is very easy, but 99% of students get this wrong! Watch this video and learn how to do it right.
Learners often say 'Can you repeat?'. Unfortunately this is bad English. In fact, it's not really English at all, but here is the good news: we can solve this problem. We can say 'Can you repeat that?'. If you want to make it polite you can say 'Can you repeat that, please?'. 'Can you repeat that, please?' - that's the best way to say it in English.
Let's look at this sentence together: 'Can you repeat that, please?' or we can say it like this: 'Please can you repeat that?'. The 'please' can go at the end of the sentence or at the beginning of the sentence. It's your choice.
Sometimes one word is enough. We can simply ask 'Pardon?'. This is a formal and slightly old-fashioned way to ask somebody to repeat something. The intonation goes up at the end. Listen again: 'Pardon?'. Alternatively, you can say 'Sorry?'. Again, the intonation goes up. Listen again: 'Sorry?'. This is very common.
So we can say 'Please can you repeat that?' or we can say 'Sorry, can you repeat that?'. Now let's look at two useful verbs: to repeat something, to say something again. These have the same meaning. They are synonymous. We can say 'Sorry, can you repeat that?', 'Sorry, can you say that again?'.
An informal way to ask somebody to repeat themselves is to use one of these short phrases. 'Come again?' - this is a very informal way of asking somebody to repeat themselves; we use it in informal situations and with friends. Alternatively, we can say 'What was that?' - again this is informal and we use it in informal situations and with friends: 'What was that?'.
British people are very polite. Here is a classic expression that you can use. 'I didn't quite catch that?'. If you want to make it more polite you can add 'I'm sorry' at the start: 'I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that?' Here are some similar alternatives that you can use: 'I didn't quite catch that.', 'I didn't hear that.', 'I didn't get that.', 'I didn't understand that.'.
Thank you for watching. I hope you enjoyed this video, and if you did please like, subscribe and tell your friends. See you again soon. Bye-bye!
