I'm calling it now in December 2025 before we've even seen him play a full season: Anthony Santander's contract with the Blue Jays is going to be a disaster. This 5-year, $92.5 million deal is going to age terribly, limit the team's flexibility, and people will look back on it as one of the worst free agent signings in franchise history. And the fact that nobody seems willing to say this out loud is driving me insane.
Here's the fundamental problem: The Blue Jays are paying Santander based on one fluky career year. He just hit 44 home runs with Baltimore - incredible, but a MASSIVE outlier. His previous career high was 33, and most seasons he's been in the 20-25 range. Toronto is paying $18+ million per year for past performance that isn't sustainable instead of projecting what he'll actually do going forward.
Santander's profile screams future disaster. He's a three true outcomes guy - home runs, walks, strikeouts. Mediocre batting average, doesn't steal bases, on-base percentage isn't special. You're getting power and nothing else. And power is the most volatile skill in baseball. He's turning 30, and as he hits 31, 32, 33, that power WILL decline. What are you left with then? A below-average hitter making $18 million a year.
The defense is TERRIBLE. He's a corner outfielder with no real position - not good enough in left, not good enough in right, definitely can't play center. He'll have to DH a lot, creating a roster crunch with Vlad Guerrero and George Springer. Zero defensive value means his bat has to carry the entire load. And it won't over 5 years.
Think about the context: The Blue Jays just made the World Series. Their biggest need was obviously the bullpen - everyone knew it. And instead of addressing that, they signed a corner outfielder to a big contract. They're making moves just to make moves, not fixing actual problems.
Here's the tell: The ORIOLES let Santander walk. They had him for years, saw him every day, knew his tendencies and limitations, and decided he wasn't worth this money. When the team that knows a player best lets him walk, that should tell you something.
Let me paint the nightmare scenario: Year 3, Santander is 32. Power drops to 25 home runs. Batting average is .220. OBP under .300. He's a full-time DH not producing, you're paying him $18M, and you can't trade him because nobody wants that contract. Meanwhile you need bullpen help and money to extend other players. You're just STUCK.
And here's what nobody's talking about: Santander played in a bandbox in Baltimore. Camden Yards is incredibly hitter-friendly. A ton of his homers were park-assisted. Now he's going to Rogers Centre, which is decent but not Camden Yards. His power numbers will almost certainly drop just from the park change. You're betting on a career year being repeatable in a LESS favorable environment.
The contract structure makes it worse - 5 years guaranteed, no team option, no flexibility. Even if he's terrible in year 3, you're on the hook for years 4 and 5. Given his age and profile, the odds of him being worth $18M in those later years are extremely low.
Here's the real damage: What if in 3 years the Blue Jays need to extend Vlad or make a big trade for pitching, and they CAN'T because too much money is tied up in Santander's contract? Then it's not just a bad deal - it's a franchise-altering mistake.
Championship organizations like the Dodgers or Rays wouldn't touch this deal. They'd identify the risk and find better value elsewhere. But the Blue Jays saw 44 home runs and convinced themselves it was repeatable. In 3 years when everyone's talking about what a terrible contract this is, remember it was obvious from day one.
