In this video we will see a few A Class Trams at St Vincents Plaza.
The A Class Tram is a high floor Yarra Tram introduced in 1984 and 1987. The trams were built by Comeng in Dandenong and there design is based of the older Z Class Trams (which were based of a type of tram in Gothenburg Sweden. The A Class trams we see in this video are #299 and #249 which are both out of Southbank Depot.
We see tram #299 terminating at St Vincents Plaza after running a Route 30 Service down Latrobe Street. Route 30 is the shortest tram route in Melbourne at 2.9k. The Route is normally serviced by the longer low floor E Class Trams but A Class trams are seen in very rare cases - like in this video.
We then see #249 running a service to Victoria Gardens, the tram has come from St Kilda and has ran down Collins Street in the CBD. The route 12 is a longer route than 30 at 16.2k. The A class is the only tram that normally runs on the route 12, so unfortunately there are no low floor tram services on this route.
Both tram routes run out of Southbank Depot.
St Vincents Plaza is one of the only tram stops in Melbourne to have three platforms. The reason for having 3 is too allow route 11 trams to turn left onto Brunswick street without disrupting the other tram routes. St Vincents Plaza is located in the suburbs of Fitzroy and East Melbourne and is in the local government areas of Yarra and Melbourne. The tram stop is a "superstop" meaning it has step free access to low floor trams and has passenger information.
St Vincents Plaza is served by tram routes 11 (E Class), 12 (A Class), 30 (E Class) and 109 (A, C1 Class).
