By the 1850s two processes dominated photography. The daguerrotype produced finely detailed one-off images on metal plates while the calotype created negatives which could produce multiple prints. English sculptor, Frederick Scott Archer, realised that combining the best qualities of the daguerrotype and calotype processes he could create a technique that made sharp yet reproducible images. He created a way of producing a negative on glass instead of paper which made a finely detailed image like the daguerrotype, but as negative this could be used to make multiple positive prints like the calotype.
