Tom Sermanni:
Q: What factors went into keeping Abby and Hope on the bench to start the match?
TS: "Well, we're looking at this as a two-game series and we're looking at game time for different people, so we kind of worked it out before the game. For some players we worked out the specific time s that they were going to be on, and Abby and Hope were two of those players, so there's nothing secretive behind it or anything like that."
Q: How did you feel about the team's start in the first half? It was pretty electrifying, wasn't it?
TS: "We talked about how we wanted to start, so we started very well for 20 minutes and then we went back to how we normally start and allowed them to come back into the game... So, we started, like I said, as we wanted in the first 15 or 20 I was really pleased with. But then the second part of the first half I thought we really took our foot off the pedal and allowed them to come back in the game, so I was a bit disappointed with how we played the second part of the first half."
Q: In general, you have to be happy with the result, though, right?
TS: "Yeah, but there's more than just the result about these games. You know, we're looking at two things, the result obviously, but we're also looking at our performance. And there's aspects of our performance that we need to improve on if we want to improve as a team. When we do the things that we can do well, we're a really, really good side. When we switch off and start doing sloppy things, we become an average side and we've got to tighten up in those areas."
Q: What have you seen from Kristie Mewis in the past training sessions
TS: "I think what we've seen from her is what we saw tonight. I thought she had a very, very sound game tonight. She gives us a great balance on the left-hand side. She's very comfortable in possession. She's got the ability to hit long passes, she's got good technique for long or short passes and I think tonight as well she showed some really good defensive discipline as she does normally, but hasn't been at left back. So, from that aspect I was pleased with how she played."
Q: Was it always part of your plan to bring in Morgan Brian and give her her first cap tonight?
TS: "We hoped to. You never know as the game goes on what's going to happen, but I think it was a good environment to bring a young player on and to get her to help her settle in. And to be honest, she's been outstanding in training all week and when she came in she looked calm, she looked composed and she played exceptionally well."
Q: Was it nice to see Abby get the chance to bury one at the end there after knocking on the door the whole second half?
TS: "I nearly dug my hamstring jumping up with that header because I thought she's going to score here with the header, so it was good for her to get a goal and she's getting closer to that mark now. Hopefully we can get that out of the way sooner rather than later then things will get easier for her."
Q: How much does her aerial presence help?
TS: "It's huge. It's not just her aerial presence, her presence; but having that target in there and that presence is really, really important. It helps all the other players because it takes pressure off the other players as well. She's still a world class player, undoubtedly and a very, very potent player."
Q: Upon her arrival it really got you guys back on track after that period where they scored the goal... (inaudible)
TS: "Hopefully it wasn't just her arrival. Hopefully it was a team stepping up at the end of a game and actually getting back to focusing on the game, getting back to being more disciplined and getting some of the complacency that we had in the second part of the first half out of the system. So, I don't know how much Abby helped that, but certainly we started the second half and for most of the second half played as I wanted us to play."
Q: Hope's save right after that...
TS: "There's critical points in games and that was one of them, definitely."
Q: What did you see from her tonight knowing that this was her first appearance in a while?
TS: "You wouldn't know she's been out for four or five months. She was very sound. She's come on cold and within five minutes reeled off a game-changing save and I think that highlights how well she's back."
