Félicien David is a French composer. He is primarly known for the major role he played in the development of Orientalism in French music, mainly through his ode-symphonie Le Désert (1844). This work, a huge success, was composed using the memories of a travel he made in Orient between 1833 and 1835. Quite famous during his lifetime, Félicien David was almost completely forgotten after his death.
This string quartet was the only one out of the four string quartets Félicien David composed that was published during the composer's lifetime.
