Neck, shoulder and upper back pain can be caused by physical or emotional trauma, poor posture from slumping over a computer, “texting neck” or a sedentary lifestyle in general. As the front body shortens, the lungs, diaphragm and internal organs are compressed which can cause respiratory, circulatory and digestive problems. Even yoga students can be challenged in basic postures because of tight shoulders. Somatic movements re-educate the nervous system by using soft, small joint freeing motions to investigate the body while moving with the breath. The awareness is on sensation as if doing a moving meditation.
Please practice the seated poses in a chair if you are at all uncomfortable seated on the floor. Enjoy investigating movement potential, safely releasing hidden tension and regaining control of the muscles. Many of these postures are perfect for desk breaks.
