The unrest was sparked by a large crowd's resistance to a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid. The Hindu side cites historical texts and an ASI report to support their temple claim, while the Muslim side dismisses it, invoking the 1991 Supreme Court ruling preserving the status of religious sites as they were in 1947.
