Charles Scott Sherrington Biography - English Neurophysiologist, Bacteriologist and a Pathologist
Considered the father of current Neuroscience. Sherrington studied medicine at the University of Cambridge, from which he graduated in 1885. Later he further studied in Berlin with Robert Koch and Rudolf Virchow and in Strasbourg with F. Goltz.
In 1887 Sherrington joined the St. Thomas Hospital School of Medicine, where he taught medicine. Later he carried out experimental work at the Brown Institution, the veterinary department of the University of London. In 1895, he became a professor at the University of Liverpool. He obtained the post of Professor of Physiology at the University of Oxford in 1913. He was President of the Royal Society from 1920 to 1925. Sherrington received the Grand Cross of the British Empire in 1922 and the Order of Merit in 1924. He retired from academic life in 1935, but he continued to lecture and write.
He was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work in the field of neurophysiology: localization of the functions of the cerebral cortex, reflexological investigations, etc.
