Common Mistakes in English: The Difference Between Hear and Listen

Hey, friends! It is time for another video about common mistakes in English. In this video, I will talk about a very common mistake students usually make, which is the right use of verbs to listen and to hear. Students usually get confused and misuse these verbs. Both verbs have the same “translation” but they are used in different situations. For instance, the verb "hear" is more related to the ability we have, our hearing ability, so if you don’t understand what someone says because there was a noise or the person spoke too low, you should say: I can’t hear you. The verb "listen", though, is different. We use “listen” to give the idea of “attention”. You are paying attention to what someone is saying, at the sound around you. Another common mistake students make is related to the verb listen and the preposition “to”. Whenever there is an object next to the verb listen, you will need the preposition to. For example, I listen to music.
