In this session, Dr. Judy discusses both the symptoms and possible causes of Vestibular Disease in dogs. For the most part, the predominant symptom is the tilting of the head along with dizziness and a drunken walk. However, Dr. Judy shares that these may point to many different possibilities other than vestibular disease. She advises that along with these symptoms, vestibular disease will also produce a head tilt accompanied with rapid eye movement, either back and forth or rotary. Some of the causes of these symptoms can be issues with the inner ear, reaction to chemicals such as antibiotics or other medicines. Dr. Judy suggests always having blood work done when these symptoms occur and especially checking for issues with the thyroid. While most symptoms only last 48 hours, some may be prolonged 7 to 10 days. Supportive care is definitely required and always be sure any dog suffering from these symptoms is kept hydrated.
