Do You Know the New Car Insurance Law?

Описание: Car insurance can be kind of complicated, and difficult to understand. Even more so when the laws are constantly changing that pertain to auto insurance!! Nonetheless, it is imperative that we all have car insurance to protect us in the unfortunate case of an accident.

Attorney Randy Lenhart from Huffman & Huffman joined the ladies of Living 757 to help explain the new law that went into effect on July 1st!

Randy explained that there are three separate coverages when it comes to car insurance.

The first coverage is liability coverage. This is the one most people know about! If you cause an accident or someone is suing you, your insurance will represent you up to your coverage limit.

The second type of coverage is property damage. This helps repair or replace property that is involved in some kind of accident.

The third type of coverage is one of the more tricky parts of auto insurance coverage. This is uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. It protects you just in case a careless driver causes injury to you, your UIM coverage will take care of you. The new law that just went into effect changes how UM and UIM insurance coverage is applied.

Before July 1st, if you got into an accident and the other driver had bodily injury coverage, it would offset your uninsured motorist coverage. Now if you were to get into the same accident, your UIM coverage would stack on top of the other driver’s coverage. This significantly increases your recovery if you were to be injured in an accident that wasn’t your fault.
