Thai protests: Demonstrators take over key intersections in Bangkok in challenge to government

Описание: Thousands of protesters took over key intersections in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sunday, defying a ban on demonstrations for a fourth day with chants of “down with dictatorship” and “reform the monarchy.”

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, a former junta leader the protesters seek to oust, is concerned about the spreading protests, his spokesperson said, adding that the government wants to talk with protest leaders.

Demonstrations have persisted despite the arrests of dozens of protesters and their leaders, the use of water cannons and shutdowns of much of Bangkok’s metro rail system.

“This is our time. Everybody's out and we shouldn't be afraid of anything,” one protester said. “We're all protesting peacefully and orderly, there's no chaos. Any violence that happened was started by the government."

Following the arrests of many protest leaders, previously unknown figures have emerged to lead the crowds which have organized by themselves.

Police made no immediate steps to intervene on Sunday as protesters took over Victory Monument and Asok, two of Bangkok’s most important transportation hubs. Police said there were around 10,000 people at Victory monument and that there were no plans to suppress the protest.
