In vitro testing is a fundamental part of drug discovery. Its purpose is to help scientists and medics understand cells in a laboratory setting - before animal or human testing can go ahead. However, it has limitations given that most of the observations typically occur in 2D. Prof Rosin and her team have changed this using cutting edge processes and technologies that now allow us to observe cells during the in vitro testing in 3D, allowing for a much better understanding of the interactions of these cells with drugs and other microorganisms.
