This is a super simple way to learn pharmacology faster and easier in nursing school, step by step. It will help you understand the critical thinking and WHY behind the side effects, and how NSAID's actually works inside your body.

Mechanism of Action of NSAID's:
The true MOA of NSAID's is not fully understood, but they are thought to work by inhibiting COX enzymes, which then inhibits prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are the main component responsible for pain, inflammation, and fever within the CNS. They promote inflammation in the body, and are normally responsible for 3 things: protecting the GI tract from ulcers, allowing the kidneys to get more blood, through renal vasodilation, and helping platelets aggregate.

Side Effects of NSAID's:
Increased risk of bleeding and ulcers in the GI tract because when NSAIDs inhibit COX enzymes, and therefore reduce prostaglandins, those 3 things, ulcer protection in the GI tract, renal vasodilation, and platelet aggregation can't happen. So then, the GI tract is prone to ulcers and bleeding.

Decreased kidney function can happen over time because of the COX inhibition that inhibits the prostaglandins from increasing renal blood flow, so the kidneys can become damaged because they don't get as much blood flow.

Increased bleeding risk can happen because the platelet aggregation is inhibited.

Now we know more about how NSAID's work inside the body, and the critical thinking about why they would cause those side effects.
