"We will try our best to save the main important city, but of course Bangkok is the bottom, on the below and so Bangkok is the last destination for the water to drain to the ocean. That's why we need some water to the draining system, the water system. We'll try to be careful and not hurt all of Bangkok because this is the capital city."

STORYLINE:
Thailand's Prime Minister has warned residents of the Bangkok to move their possessions up to higher levels as flood waters finally began seeping into Bangkok's residential areas, on Friday.
Authorities conceded they couldn't hold back the huge volume of water running down from the north and opened up key sluice gates to let it drain to the sea through the capital's canal system.
For more than a week, people living within Bangkok's hastily-erected sandbagged ramparts had hoped they would be safe from the deluge.
Now that hope has been shattered, for some at least.
For residents of the suburb of Laksi, Friday morning brought knee-deep water that was steadily rising.
Some trudged through the flood, putting on as brave a face as they could manage.
Others struggled to proof their homes as best they could, even as the water rose around them and their property.
Just days ago the authorities were sounding hopeful that the defences would hold and the inner city would be kept dry.
But on Friday morning the Prime Minister took the ominous step of warning the residents of the capital to move their possessions to a higher level.
"Don't panic" she said.
Huge volumes of run-off water from the north of the country are expected imminently.
