Gedling Recap takes me back to one of Nottinghamshire’s most atmospheric industrial landmarks — Gedling Colliery, famously known as The Pit of Nations. In this episode, I return to the former colliery site to explore what remains of a place that once brought together workers from across the world, united underground by coal, graft, and community.
As I walk the grounds, I search for surviving relics of the pit’s working life — fragments of infrastructure, hidden details, and overlooked reminders of the men who spent their lives below the surface. With nature slowly reclaiming the site, every discovery tells a quiet story of industry, resilience, and change.
The journey also leads back to the abandoned Mapperley Tunnel, a place that viewers of the channel may recognise. In a previous video, I spent a night sleeping inside this long-forgotten railway tunnel — and revisiting it now offers a chance to reflect on that experience and the tunnel’s role in Gedling’s industrial past.
This video blends local history, exploration, and personal reflection, capturing how places like Gedling Colliery continue to echo with stories long after the last shift ended. If you’re interested in hidden history, forgotten infrastructure, and Nottinghamshire’s coal mining heritage, this is a walk you won’t want to miss.
