Tribute to Barclay James Harvest - Doctor doctor

Описание: This is my tribute to Barclay James Harvest, one of the greatest bands ever, and a bunch of finest musicians and songwriters in the history of rock music; John Lees, Les Holroyd, Woolly Wolstenholme and Mel Pritchard. Initially this was intended to be included in the BJH Tribute series “Through the eyes of their fans” 2004, but in that time I had no possibilities to make home recordings. Finally, in 2008 I managed to record something with electric guitars, bass, keyboards, and a lousy laptop computer plus Audacity recording software. I had just bought e-drums, and with no experience of playing I added also the drum track, instead of making it with a software. Obviously the latter option would have offered a better result, but on the other hand, this is all self-made.
The biggest problems were caused by the computer; it was the only available with a line in –connection, and very slow even by standards of that time. That resulted inexplicable timing errors between the instrument tracks. Obviously it was because of the latency. One single correction, for example shifting a track backwards or forward took several minutes and I had not enough patience to finish the recording.
I had almost forgot it, but by chance I happened to find it in a backup disc, and I decided to try to finalize it. It was basically easy with a good computer. For better results, all the tracks would have been re-played and recorded, but I wanted to keep the originals because they are sort of history.
The song itself is a track from BJH album “Turn of the tide” 1981, which in my opinion is quite a weak achievement among post-Woolly albums. The track itself in the album has quite a strange arrangement. Maybe they wanted to try some modern approach. But the song itself is pretty ok (except the lyrics :) and I tried to bring some of the original BJH sound (without the Mellotron) to my version.
The images in the “video” are all from different internet sources. Many thanks to the original publishers! I wanted to have merely black and white images, except the last butterfly, because that fits the theme, in my opinion. A sharp-eyed viewer may find there also an image of another great British band, who were big idols to BJH!

Tämä on kunnianosoitukseni Barclay James Harvest -yhtyeelle, joka oli yksi historian hienoimmista ja aliarvostetuimmista bändeistä ja upeita muusikoita ja lauluntekijöitä; John Lees, Les Holroyd, Woolly Wolstenholme ja Mel Pritchard. Aluksi tätä oli tarkoitus ehdottaa BJH Tribute -levylle “Through the eyes of their fans” 2004, mutta silloin minulla ei ollut mahdollisuuksia tehdä kotiäänityksiä. Lopulta vuonna 2008 onnistuin äänittämään jotain sähkökitaralla, bassolla, koskettimilla ja surkealla kannettavalla tietokoneella ja Audacity -ohjelmistolla. Olin juuri ostanut sähkörummut, mutta minulla ei ollut juuri kokemusta rumpujensoitosta. Lisäsin myös rumpuraidan, sen sijaan että olisin tehnyt sen jollain koneella tai ohjelmalla. Ilmeisesti jälkimmäinen vaihtoehto olisi antanut paremman tuloksen, mutta toisaalta, tässä on kaikki omatekoista.
Suurimmat ongelmat johtuivat tietokoneesta; se oli ainoa käytettävissä oleva, jossa oli linjaliitäntä, ja hyvin hidas jopa silloisella mittapuulla. Tästä seurasi käsittämättömiä ajoitusvirheitä raitojen välillä, ilmeisesti johtuen latenssista. Yksi ainoa korjaus, esimerkiksi raidan siirtäminen taaksepäin tai eteenpäin kesti useita minuutteja ja minulla ei ollut tarpeeksi kärsivällisyyttä viimeistellä äänitystä.
Olin melkein unohtanut sen, mutta satuin löytämään sen varmuuskopiolevyltä, ja päätin yrittää viimeistellä sen. Se oli periaatteessa helppoa hyvällä tietokoneella. Paremman tuloksen olisin saanut, jos olisin äänittänyt kaikki uudelleen, mutta halusin pitää alkuperäiset, koska ne ovat tavallaan historiaa.
Kappale itsessään on kappaleen BJH:n albumilta "Turn of the tide" 1981, joka mielestäni on varsin heikko esitys Woollyn jälkeisistä albumeista. Kappaleen sovitus on mielestäni aika hölmö. Ehkä he halusivat kokeilla jotain nykyaikaista lähestymistapaa. Mutta biisi itsessään on ihan ok (paitsi sanoitus :) ja yritin saada tähän versioon jotakin alkuperäistä BJH -soundia (ilman Mellotronia).
"Videon" kuvat ovat kaikki eri lähteistä netistä. Kiitos alkuperäisille julkaisijoille! Halusin vain mustavalkoisia kuvia, paitsi viimeinen perhonen, koska joka se sopii mielestäni teemaan. Tarkkanäköinen katsoja voi löytää sieltä myös kuvan eräästä toisesta suuresta brittiläisestä bändistä, joka oli BJH:n suuri esikuva.
