Hidden inside a park on the outskirts of Tokyo is a collection of buildings that shaped the atmosphere of Spirited Away in real life.
The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum preserves bathhouses, inns, shops, workshops, and bars from Japan’s past — ordinary places that once defined daily life. Rather than recreating these buildings directly, Hayao Miyazaki studied their scale, layout, and mood, using them as architectural reference when building the spirit world seen in the film.
This video is a quiet walk through those spaces, focusing on the details that helped transform everyday architecture into something timeless.
