At around midnight, the nightclub — Birch by Romeo Lane — erupted in flames. What began as a blast — reportedly from a gas cylinder — turned into a deadly inferno. Within minutes, thick smoke filled the building and panic set in.

Eyewitnesses recount the terror: the explosion, the fire spreading fast, the dance floor swallowed by flames. Some tried to run — down to the kitchen or basement. But many there were trapped. The exit routes were narrow, the staircases cramped, and the basement — where dozens worked — became a deathtrap. More than 20 lives were lost.
Preliminary reports from police and fire officials confirm at least 23 people died, including club staff and a few tourists. Over 50 others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. Those who died succumbed mostly to suffocation from smoke, not burns — a grim indicator that escape was blocked, air was swallowed by toxic fumes before flames consumed walls.

Questions now swirl: why was a gas cylinder even inside the club? Why were safety norms apparently ignored? And how did a venue — reportedly operating on flimsy permits — remain open, hosting hundreds on a weekend night? Local residents claim the club had been issued demolition notices earlier for lacking proper approvals. Yet it stayed open.
As investigators begin their work, the possibility of gross negligence — fire-safety lapses, illegal structure, overcrowding — looms large. This tragedy may not just be an accident, but a systemic failure.

The fire started in what appears to be the kitchen or storage area — where LPG cylinders were used. As one eyewitness put it: a deafening blast, then chaos. People on the dance floor rushed for exits. Some ran down — only to find the basement blocked by smoke and panic. Over 100 people may have been inside when it began.
By the time fire brigades arrived, the club was already engulfed. Victims were found in narrow corridors, stairwells, basement rooms — many unconscious or overcome by smoke. Rescue operations ran through the night. Survivors described the scene as “unbelievable confusion, screaming, no way out.” First responders had to navigate narrow exits and blocked pathways just to reach the injured.

Official toll — 23 dead, dozens injured. Most victims were staff members; a few were tourists. Burn injuries were fewer — smoke inhalation was the cause in majority. Goa’s Chief Minister has ordered a full magisterial inquiry, called this a “very painful day,” and promised strict action against those responsible. Licences are under review; clubs across North Goa face urgent safety audits.
As the state reels from grief, two questions hang heavy: could this have been avoided? And will justice — and safety reform — finally follow this tragedy?
