Miami Black History: Brother Jolien R. Taylor

Описание: 1911: A native of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, Brother Taylor moved to Miami in 1911. He then worked at a tailor shop owned by F J. Black on Cherry Avenue (which is now Flagler Street).

1927: He became a charter member of the Rho Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc and the chapter’s first secretary.

1929: Later would own two stores, one located on 283 NW 8th Street and the other one at 304 NW 14th Street.

At one point, he taught tailoring at Booker T. Washington High School for four years.

He was a founding member of the Adelphian Men’s Club, and the National Association of Real Estate Brokers Inc.

Jolien was a well known and successful relator and business executive in South Florida. He fought hard and smart to ensure that Blacks were educated and prepared when it came to owning, building, obtaining and keeping property.

Brother Taylor would often serve as Master of Ceremonies or Host at elegant or monumental events within the Black community.

He was an honorary member of the Sunlight School of Beauty along with Brother Henry Reeves, Rev. John E. Culmer and other prominent blacks.

1970s: Brother Earl Davis and Brother Benjamin Addison can verbally revisit and remember the 1970s when they had the honor of spending time with Brother Taylor in his twilight years. Brother Taylor is the reason why we know our history today.
