Through sitcoms we watch Americans like us going through their everyday lives. In America’s best sitcoms, we’ve felt that we could relate to the characters and their situations.

But there are some classic American sitcoms which mightnot air today. Had they been made today they might not please certain sensibilities. Reruns of these shows may even upset some modern viewers.

But why is that? As tastes and views change, some shows are considered shocking or offensive by today’s standards. But is this justified? Why have our tastes changed? Is the shock toward classic sitcoms too much of an overreaction?

Classic sitcoms like “All in the Family” were groundbreaking during their time. But today, there would likely be an outrage toward Archie Bunker’s rants.

The same would go for Al Bundy’s remarks on “Married…with Children!” While we laughed at his rude remarks to some of his customers, we wonder if audiences today would appreciate the humor. The show did cause some controversy during its initial airing, but not enough to get it cancelled. We wonder how things would pan out today…

Shows such as “Amos N’ Andy” were among the first to show Black Americans in the limelight. Unfortunately, the depictions were stereotypical and certainly not flattering. While the show was very popular, we expect there’d be outrage if there were reruns of the show today.

Shows like “Baywatch” were criticized for objectifying women. As was some of the humor in the show “Two and a Half Men.” And imagine what would happen if people saw the prominent display of the Confederate Flag in “The Dukes of Hazzard.”
