Today i think i have discovered what could be the missing link:

Today i found this really interesting paper by Hafen et al in the Clinical Science Journal published in 1996
These guys took 8 healthy men and measured their ionised magnesium levels/ total magnesium levels at rest and after 30 minutes of hyperventilation where they were breathing at 20/minute and then they got these patients to breath normally again

So the findings were
1. The average heart rate went up by 13/min (but in some people by unto 41/min)
2. All of them developed tingling and numbness in their hands
3. 4 developed numbness in their legs
4. 5 developed spasm of their hands
5. 2 complain of lightheadedness
6. Carbon dioxide levels in their blood fell
7. Total magnesium concentration stayed the same
8. but the ionised magnesium concentration fell significantly and remained low for 30 minutes after hyperventilation

And this may well be the reason ectopics go up when people feel stressed and this would then explain firstly why the breathing exercises work and secondly why taking magnesium helps with ectopics in about 90% of patients i meet.
