Superstar Battles: THE POLICE V SHAWN COLVIN Every Little Thing S(He) Does Is Magic

Описание: A change of pace and style for this Rock Meets Folk double with the mega successful trio from Britain: The Police and the bluesy pop beauty of Shawn Colvin. 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic' the original is just over 40 years old as I post this in June 2022. The track was one of the most successful in the brilliant career that The Police had from their initial decade together. The second of the singles issued from their 4th long player 'Ghost In The Machine', 'Every Little Thing' was a #1 in their homeland; a #2 here in Australia and a #3 in America. It was noteworthy in their discography for its use of piano and synths; not a regularity, but it still retains its rock roots.

I've long wanted to pair it with this wondrous cover from the awesome Shawn Colvin, a three time Grammy winner in her own right; known for her folk and pop/rock outings including 'Steady On', and her most successful 'Sunny Came Home'. But there is so much more to Shawn Colvin. One of the finest singer/songwriters to emerge in the late 80's, she is both a fine composer as well as a thoughtful interpreter of others' work as demonstrated on this deceptively simple treatment of The Police's classic. Included on her 1994 opus 'Cover Girl', which finds her bringing new touches to songs by Steve Earle, Tom Waits, Talking Heads, Bob Dylan and of course Sting. Shawn brings such a freshness and purity to this song and I loved it upon first listen some 28 years ago. I had the immense pleasure of meeting Shawn Colvin in person at an industry showcase in Sydney back in 1997 and got to go backstage and shake her hand and tell her how much her music meant to me. The dork I am (and was), I took all her CD's with me, as I couldn't decide which I wanted her to sign!! I was so starstruck I forgot to even ask! She was so lovely. And a truly superb vocalist.

I've stacked the deck for myself on this post, as I was never much of a Police fan, but I get how iconic and impactful their music has been for two generations of fans. This upload is testament to the truth that a great song in the right hands can be crafted and delivered in different ways. It is an unlikely pairing, but Shawn chose to cover 'Every Little Thing' and I think it is one of my favourite of her vast collection of recordings. There's a dozen other clips bearing her name on my channel and I am always happy to wax lyrical about this great artist. Oh, and Sting and Andy and Stewart are pretty good too :) :) :)
