The Election Commission of India is rolling out a controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Kerala ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, raising widespread concern. This "purification" process, which aims to remove deceased, relocated, and ineligible voters, led to 6.5 million people being struck from the rolls in Bihar. The Commission is using the 2002 electoral list as the base reference, a move questioned by opposition parties who wonder why a 23-year-old list is being used when a more recent one exists. The ECI justifies this by stating that 2002 was the last time a document-based intensive revision was conducted.

This process critically impacts anyone registered to vote after 2002, who must now re-submit valid identification documents to secure their right to vote—a group that includes 5.4 million people added to the rolls since then. Shockingly, the Voter ID card and Ration card are not accepted as valid proof for this verification. While voters on the 2002 list only need to fill out a form, millions of others face a tight deadline of January 2026 to complete the process.
