This article reports on a pilot project using a quasi-experimental design of a 20-hour intervention, Getting Off the Emotional Roller Coaster Skill-Building Family Education Course. Results with a sample of 270 show promise in reducing burden and improving attitudes, knowledge, and skills for families of adults with borderline, bipolar, or major depressive disorders. This skill-building course fills several gaps among the limited options for American families. You will learn about the disturbing problem of missed diagnoses and misdiagnoses among this cluster of disorders. You will also learn about the course’s unique intervention elements such as the infusion of the mental health recovery model with dialectical behavior therapy and the choice of co-facilitator teams. These teams consist of a clinician who has treated these disorders and has a loved one with at least one of these disorders; a person in recovery from one of these disorders; and a trained graduate of the course. Unlike other major American family education programs which utilize trained volunteers, the co-facilitators of this course were paid. This compensation policy opens up teaching and mentoring opportunities to candidates who may not be willing or able to volunteer, giving family participants more opportunities to learn new perspectives.
