Welcome back to Where U BEANS!? If you’re new here, this channel is all about chasing epic mountain bike trails, big views, and unforgettable rides. In this episode, we head to Northern Arizona to explore an incredible and often overlooked mountain biking destination near Verde Village and Cottonwood, Arizona, in the Mingus Black Canyon trail system.
If you love riding in Sedona but want a less crowded mountain biking alternative, this area should be high on your list. The Mingus Mountain Black Canyon trails deliver the same jaw-dropping scenery, epic views, and technical riding—without the heavy trail traffic. Fewer riders, fewer hikers, and way more room to ride at your own pace make this a fantastic option for those looking to escape the Sedona crowds.
We started at the Mingus Black Canyon Trailhead, located off Highway 260 and Ogden Ranch Road, roughly halfway between I-17 and Cottonwood. There are no signs marking the turn, so keep your eyes peeled. Ogden Ranch Road quickly turns to dirt and leads straight to the trailhead, setting the tone for a remote and rugged backcountry ride.
The Mingus Mountain Black Canyon area is known for steep terrain, dramatic elevation changes, and mountain bike trails that cling to the sides of very steep mountainsides. Nearly every trail offers panoramic views of the Verde Valley, Jerome, and surrounding high desert landscape. Exposure is a constant theme here, and riders should be comfortable with narrow bench-cut trail and serious consequences for mistakes.
Some trails are more forgiving than others, but Mingus Black Canyon Trail is on a different level. Although officially rated as a blue, it could easily be considered a black diamond trail in multiple sections due to the extreme exposure, loose rock, and technical features. This trail is straight-up scary in places—and absolutely unforgettable.
Our ride began with a climb up Quail Springs, gaining elevation while taking in massive views. From there, we dropped into Copper Chief, which was the highlight of the day. Copper Chief is fast, flowy, and highly exposed—one of the best downhill mountain bike trails in Northern Arizona if you like speed, flow, and adrenaline.
We finished the loop on Mingus Black Canyon Trail, which truly had it all: flow, fear, exposure, and even a bit of technical riding to keep things interesting. The full ride came in at just over 16 miles with 1,983 feet of elevation gain, making it a solid intermediate-to-advanced mountain bike ride.
If you’re searching for the best mountain biking near Sedona, Northern Arizona mountain bike trails, or a crowd-free Sedona alternative, this ride checks every box.
Hold on tight and enjoy the ride! If you’re stoked on this content, like and subscribe to Where U BEANS!?—it’s always appreciated and helps the channel grow. Thanks for riding along, and we’ll see you on the trail! 🤘
