I was quite surprised when my 15 year old agave cactus suddenly started to grow like crazy. Within weeks it produced a stem of about 7m hight. Apparently they flower once in their lifetime and die afterwards. So did my cactus and attracted birds and lots of bees. As I bird novice I thought they were called "love birds". Boy I was wrong. They are called rainbow lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus) and is a Australian native bird. But hey they fly around in couples and cuddle all the time :)
A great spectacle every sunrise and sunset for a few weeks. Very loud though :) After it finished flowering, the stem turned brown and it looks like the plant is dying.
Isn't nature great. The birds have gone now. No more honey. Finally I get to sleep in again in the morning without the natural alarm clock. I wouldn't want to miss it though.
