Every summer, when I spend my vacation with Grandma in a small village called Zielona Góra, the most anticipated event is the annual festival organized by the villagers. This year was no exception – in mid-July, stalls with food, children’s games, and a folk music stage appeared on the village square. When Grandma told me we were going to the festival, I immediately sent a message to my friend Zosia, who lives in the city and has never been to a village festival. “Do you like village festivals? Do you find them fun? 😅 I’m going with Grandma today, and she says there will be traditional dumplings and oscypek (smoked cheese),” I wrote.
Zosia replied quickly, full of curiosity: “I’ve never been to a village festival! Is it similar to city events? Are there a lot of people there? Tell me everything when you get back!” After sending the message, Grandma was already waiting for me at the door with a shopping bag. “Hurry up, dear, because cabbage dumplings sell out fast,” she said, smiling. On our way to the square, we could already hear folk music – violins and an accordion creating a cheerful atmosphere, and on the road, we met Grandma’s neighbors, who were also going to the festival.
When we arrived at the square, it was full of people: families with children, elderly villagers, and even a few tourists from the city. The first stall we saw was with dumplings – Grandma immediately bought two plates: one with cabbage and mushrooms, and the other with cheese. “These are the best dumplings in the area,” she said, handing me a plate. They were really delicious – the dough was soft, and the filling was aromatic. While eating, a group of musicians took the stage and started playing popular folk songs. Some villagers began dancing in the middle of the square, and children ran around the fields with balloons.
After eating, Grandma took me to the oscypek stall – a traditional cheese from the Owl Mountains, smoked over wood. The seller, an old man with a beard, gave us a piece of oscypek with marjoram. It was my first time eating fresh oscypek – it tasted intense, with a delicate woody aroma. “Once, when I was young, festivals were bigger and more frequent,” Grandma said, watching the dancing people. “According to my father, families from neighboring villages would meet at festivals and exchange news.”
While we sat on a bench eating oscypek, I sent Zosia several photos from the festival: food stalls, musicians, and a group of children playing a circle game. “Do you like village festivals? Do you find them fun? 😅 It’s amazing here – music, delicious food, and a nice atmosphere. Do you want me to bring you dumplings next time?” I wrote. Zosia replied just a few seconds later: “I want to be there! It looks incredible! I hope I can go with you next year too.”
We stayed at the festival until late evening – we listened to music, tried other traditional treats (including village cheesecake and apple compote), and talked to Grandma’s neighbors. When we walked back home, I was tired but very happy. “Did you like the festival?” Grandma asked. “Yes, very much! It was the best event of this summer,” I replied. Now I understand why people love village festivals – it’s not just food and music, but also a chance to meet loved ones and feel the tradition.
