The services on this route are normally operated by diesel multiple units but engineering work on the Hamburg - Berlin main line during 2025 meant that two sets of Class 218 diesels and double deck stock were operating local passenger services on the line.

Bad Kleinen (until 1915 Kleinen) is a municipality in the Nordwestmecklenburg district, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It is located on the north bank of the Schweriner See. Bad Kleinen is part of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region.

The municipality is located on the north bank of the Schweriner See, the fourth largest lake in Germany, and about half-way between the state capital Schwerin and Hanseatic city of Wismar, and close to Lübeck.

The DB Regio Class 218 is one of Germany’s most iconic and widely used diesel-hydraulic locomotives, serving as the backbone of non-electrified regional passenger services for decades. Introduced between 1968 and 1979, the Class 218 was the culmination of several prototype series that aimed to modernize diesel traction for the newly formed Deutsche Bundesbahn. With a power output of around 2,060 kW and a maximum speed of 140 km/h, the locomotive offered strong acceleration, reliability, and versatility, making it suitable for both passenger and lighter freight duties.

Throughout its career, the Class 218 operated extensively under DB Regio, especially in regions such as Schleswig-Holstein, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and the North Sea coastal network. It commonly hauled push-pull double-deck trains, regional expresses, and seasonal tourist services. The locomotive’s distinctive diesel-hydraulic transmission, combined with its characteristic deep engine sound, made it a memorable presence across Germany’s railways.

As newer multiple units and modern diesel locomotives entered service, the Class 218 began to be phased out, though several units remain active for regional operations, rescue duties, and special-charter trains. Its durability, adaptability, and long service life have cemented the Class 218 as one of the most significant diesel locomotives in German rail history, particularly within DB Regio’s operations.

Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG, DBAG or DB) is the German railway company, a private joint-stock company (AG) with the federal government being its majority shareholder with its headquarters in Berlin. It came into existence in 1994 as the successor to the former state railways of Germany, the Deutsche Bundesbahn of West Germany and the Deutsche Reichsbahn of East Germany. It also gained ownership of former railway assets in West Berlin held by the Verwaltung des ehemaligen Reichsbahnvermögens. Its name means "German Railway" in German.
