A northbound Union Pacific manifest climbs the UP Palmdale Cutoff at MP 466 on the Mojave Subdivision, filmed from the classic overlook at Hill 582. Clear light, great sound, and a long, heavy train working the grade — classic UP mountain railroading on one of Southern California’s busiest freight corridors.
The lead unit today is UP 8346, an EMD SD70ACe with the Thunder Cab, the highlight of the consist — UP 1989, the Rio Grande heritage unit — digs in as the first DPU. You can hear that signature SD70ACe intake roar, the deep “power‑suction vacuum cleaner” sound, every time it loads up on the climb.
