Hugging the humid Coromandel Coast on the Bay of Bengal is the union territory city, affectionately known as Pondy (formerly Pondicherry). If you are considering travel in the east of India, it is Roughly 160km from Chennai and definitely worth a visit.

In 1674, following earlier occupations by Portuguese, Danes, and Dutch; the French East India Company established a trading settlement here. The city subsequently became the countries largest French colony and remained under foreign rule until 1954; when it was finally handed back to an independent India.

As a result of this protracted European presence, Puducherry today has an intriguing fusion feel.

Firstly, a cosmopolitan synergy between Indian colour and chaos. Secondly, a spirituality, seemingly influenced by the Internationally renowned Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and nearby Auroville community. And finally, the colonial architecture, lingering language and arty bohemian-chic of France.
