LOS ANGELES, January 19, 2026 — Contemporary artist and Kaikai Kiki founder Takashi Murakami reveals the vision behind his Superflat theory and the influence of otaku culture, ukiyo-e, and Japonisme on his work. Ed Schad, curator and publications Manager of The Broad, moderates the conversation, with interpretation provided by Yuko Burtless.
As part of Asia Society Southern California's U.S.-Japan Initiative Program III, Murakami discusses how anime, otaku culture, and traditional Japanese woodblock print influence his practice. Referencing ukiyo-e master Utagawa Hiroshige alongside 19th-century Western artists including Vincent van Gogh and James McNeill Whistler, the conversation examines how historical imagery travels across time and cultures to shape modern and contemporary art.
Murakami also previews new paintings inspired by the ukiyo-e genre, bijinga (pictures of beautiful women) at Perrotin Los Angeles, reflecting his ongoing exploration of Japanese artistic heritage, cross-cultural exchange, and the layered dialogue between past and present. (43 min., 22 sec.)
