The Nigerian Army was founded in 1863 as Lagos Constabulary with the nickname “Glover’s Hausas.” It then evolved into the Hausa Constabulary in 1865, the Oil Rivers Irregulars in 1886, the Niger Coast Constabulary in 1891, the Southern Nigeria Regiment and the Northern Nigeria Regiment, West African Frontier Force, in 1900, and at amalgamation in 1914, it became known as the Nigeria Regiment, West African Frontier Force.
In 1928, it evolved into the Nigeria Regiment, Royal West African Frontier Force, then in 1956, the Queen’s Own Nigeria Regiment, Royal West African Frontier Force, the Royal Nigerian Army at Independence on October 1, 1960, and finally, it became simply known as the Nigerian Army, on October 1, 1963, when Nigeria became a republic and cut off all ties with the British.
