SN ARCHIVES - Elizabethan Playwrights Series - Educational Programme - Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593) wrote The Jew of Malta around 1589–1590, a play that examines the intersections of religion, politics, and greed in the Mediterranean world. The central figure, Barabas, is a wealthy Jewish merchant whose assets are seized by the Christian authorities of Malta to fund their war effort; his subsequent plots of vengeance propel a drama that mixes satire, dark comedy and brutal violence. The play explores how religious identity becomes entangled with economic interest and political expediency, producing a world in which moral integrity is undermined by selfishness and power struggles. Barabas is drawn as both a spectacularly theatrical villain and a more complex, ironic figure whose deeds mirror and magnify the corruption of those around him. Scholarship emphasises the play’s engagement with political hypocrisy, theatrical representation of atrocity, and Marlowe’s skill in turning contemporary pamphlets and chronicles into concentrated stage effect.
The Jew of Malta has often been accused of antisemitism because it uses negative Jewish stereotypes; however, its dramatic energy lies in exposing the hypocrisies of all social actors. The Christian rulers of Malta are portrayed as greedy, treacherous and morally bankrupt—in many scenes more ruthless and deceitful than Barabas himself—and the play stages vice as a social condition that cuts across religious labels. Marlowe’s reputation in his lifetime as a provocative, sceptical thinker accused of atheism reinforces the reading that the play interrogates religious authority and the misuse of piety rather than serving as an attack on Jews. Read in this light, The Jew of Malta presents “bad Christians” and “bad Jews,” and frequently suggests that the Christian authorities are the greater moral offenders.
