Huntington’s floodwall is one of the most important pieces of infrastructure we have. It protects more than $3 billion in homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals every day. Additionally, it prevents residents and business owners from having to spend approximately $80 million annually in flood insurance costs.
However, the floodwall is more than 85 years old. Our Huntington Stormwater Utility employees do an incredible job stretching every dollar and squeezing every bit of life out of equipment that should have been replaced decades ago. But those dollars only buy time. They do not prevent failure. They only delay it.
Modernizing this system will take planning and strong state and federal partners. But doing nothing is the most costly option of all. This video takes a closer look at the economic benefits that the floodwall provides to our community and how there are growing concerns about its condition.
