Flowering canola fields buzz with activity – and not just from pollinators. In this episode of Canola School, Amber Bell speaks with Jennifer Otani, field crop entomologist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, about why canola is so attractive to many insects and which pests growers should be watching for at this critical stage and as the crop moves into pod fill.
You'll hear:
Why canola attracts insects – Bright yellow flowers signal pollen and nectar, drawing both beneficials and pests.
Key pests to monitor at flowering or soon after – Lygus bugs, diamondback moth larvae, Bertha armyworm larvae, and grasshoppers are top concerns.
Scouting methods and thresholds – Use sweep nets and plant taps at multiple field spots, comparing counts to economic thresholds.
Grasshopper pressure – Field edges and ditches are key areas to check as nymphs transition to harder-to-manage adults.
Pollinator awareness – Communicate with nearby beekeepers before any control measures to protect honeybee populations.
Staying on top of insect pressure during flowering can protect pods and developing seeds from economic damage.
