Elasmosaurus -- Plesiosaurs were known for their long necks and streamlined flippers, and lived in the late Cretaceous period. Elasmosaurus was among the biggest of the species, weighing over 2 tons and measuring about 46 feet long. Did you know there are some who believe the Elasmosaurus still lives today … but it’s called the Loch Ness Monster!

Archelon (arch-uh-lon) -- Weighing around 2 tons and measuring around 12 feet long, this marine turtle would weigh twice as much as a VW Beetle! This creature from the late Cretaceous would put today’s Galapagos Tortoise to shame … it only weighs some 500 pounds and measures 4 feet head to tail. Archelon was the biggest turtle … think you’d want one for a pet?

Elasmotherium (elaz-moe-theer-ee-um) --… Found during the late Pleistocene in Eurasia, this creature was like a rhinoceros on steroids, and was the largest rhino. Covered in shaggy fur, it measured 20 feet long, weighed around 4 tons and sported a massive horn on its snout that measured 3 feet. There’s some speculation as to whether this animal might have been a possible source for the unicorn legend

Titanoceratops (tite-un-oh-sair-ah-tops) -- With a name meaning “Titanic Horn Face”, you know this animal means business. The biggest horned and frilled dinosaur could weigh over 7 tons and could measure some 25 feet head to tail. It’s large, elaborately ornate head likely served to attract potential mates.

Tyrannosaurus Rex - The T-Rex may have been surpassed by Spinosaurus and Giganotosaurus (jiga-nota-sore-us) as the biggest carnivorous dinosaur, but it’s still the biggest Tyrannosaurus. And weighing some 11 tons and standing around 40 tall is nothing to sneeze at. The big dino makes the list for its iconic status if nothing else. Besides, how many dinosaurs have a classic rock band named after them?

The Steppe Mammoth -- This is the biggest known elephant … Fossils of this animal have been found that measure up to 15 feet. They’re thought to have weighed up to 11 tons. Today’s African elephants measure up to 13 feet tall. As big as the Steppe Mammoth was, however, it couldn’t save itself from early humans … The animals were hunted to extinction some 300,000 years ago.

Spinosaurus -- Weighing in at 23 tons, and reaching lengths of nearly 60 feet, this creature had a skull that measured 6 feet long with a croc-like snout. It was thought to be agile for its size … in fact, evidence indicates it may have been the first dinosaur identified that could swim! It’s thought to be the largest carnivorous dinosaur.

Sarcosuchus (sar-koss-uh-chuss) -- The biggest crocodile lived some 112 million years ago, and reach lengths of 40 feet and weighed almost 9 tons. It’s thought this big croc didn’t shy away from feasting on dinosaurs and may have skirmished with Spinosaurus occasionally.

Megalodon -- Now here’s a real monster whale … this creature could grow to 59 feet long and likely weighed around 20 tons, with a mouth big enough to swallow a smaller boat. It’s considered one of the most powerful predators in the history of vertebrates, and ranks as the biggest shark yet discovered. It lived between 23 to 2.6 million years ago. Want to learn more? Magnapaulia -- Some hadrosaurs, or duck-billed dinosaurs, could grow to titanosaur-like size. Magnapaulia tipped the scales at some 25 tons and could measure 54 feet long. That makes Magnapaulia the biggest duck-billed dinosaur. Discovered in North America, the creature may have been able to use its hind legs to run

Shastasaurus -- These creatures were known as ‘fish lizards’ or Ichthyosaurs (ick-thee-oh-sores) and Shastasaurus was the biggest of the lot, estimated to weigh some 75 tons and measure 69 feet long! Specimens have been discovered in the US, China and Canada. Named after Mount Shasta in California, the huge creature favored small marine creatures and soft-bodied cephalopods (seff-uh-la-pods)

Argentinosaurus (argentina-soar-us) -- While there are claims of larger dinosaurs, this creature’s enormous size is backed up by clear evidence. The titanosaur remains were found in Argentina in 1986, and from head to tail is thought to have measured some 120 feet, with a weight of nearly 100 tons!
It’s thought to be the biggest herbivorous dinosaur yet discovered.
