Rocky at times but mostly plain and swampy the Península de Zapata National Park, to the south of the province of Matanzas is one of the largest eco holiday destinations in Cuba sheltering 190 species of birds, 31 types of reptiles, 12 species of mammals and an array of fish, insects and sea creatures.
Declared a Biosphere Reserve and Ramsar Site, it is one of the best preserved wetlands in the Caribbean, famous for its crocodile farm protecting 10 000 specimens of the Cuban crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer) which cohabits with other reptiles such as the iguana, the intrepid chameleon and several species of lizards.
