The right rear wheel of a good friend's 1991 Chevrolet S-10 was making an intermittent scraping or scratching noise. Along with that, the parking brake functionality was very degraded to the point where the brakes would not hold even when the parking brake pedal was depressed to the fullest extent of its travel.
Thinking that the brake shoes may be the culprit, we decided to replace them with new ones. When we got the wheel off, we discovered the snap-on drum retainers usually used at the factory. That tells me that these are the original brake shoes on this 94,000 mile truck, which is quite impressive for durability.
The main thing to look out for when doing this job is to realize that the brake shoes fore and aft are of different thicknesses. From what we could deduce, the rear shoe should be thicker than the front shoe. Also if you have difficulty pulling the drums off, you can reach through the backing plate and back the star wheel off a few turns to pull the shoes away from the drum enough to get them off.
