Built in the 19th century, the Parc des Ateliers was originally an industrial site for the repair and construction of locomotives. Today, it hosts the activities of LUMA Arles.
Sitting just outside Arles’s Roman city walls, the centerpiece of the 27-acre LUMA Arles campus is this tower designed by Frank Gehry.
LUMA Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in 2004 and based in Zurich, Switzerland.
It supports the activities of independent contemporary artists and other pioneers working in the fields of art, photography, publishing, documentary and multimedia.
The building, imagined by Maja Hoffmann (with Gehry), has a twisted façade decorated with stainless steel bricks.
The building has drawn praise and criticism alike.
"Like having Disneyland in the middle of your beautifulhistoric town. Just plain wrong," wrote one.
The slides are by the artist Carsten Höller, similar to his installations at other notable venues.
Look up from the bottom of the staircase and you will see yourself in an angled and slowly moving mirror......designed by Olafur Eliasson, the artist best known for his large, sun-like disc at Tate Modern in 2003.
