Hiya, I'm Margo, and I'm recreating my great-grandfather's travels through #Europe one hundred years later. Yesterday we were walking around #Rome to recreate some photos of Father Geniesse. While walking around, I came across these golden stones in the pathway. Each is engraved with the names of people who were massacred during #WorldWarTwo in concentration camps.
Here four people are remembered: Julia Sussman and Ludwig, Wolfgang, and Susanna Pollak. They were all taken to Auschwitz in October of 1943 and were murdered just five days after their capture. I never got to meet them, but I still wanted to write a #poem to them for the same reason these gold cobblestones were put here - to make sure they're still remembered.
Dear Julia Sussman and the Pollak Family,
They say all roads lead to Rome
But just as a road leads towards a place
They also lead away
Cobblestones turn into
Dirt roads turn into
Train tracks turn into
Prison camps turn into
War crimes turn into
Assassinations turn into
Golden cobblestones
Monsters took you away
But just as all roads lead away from a place
They say all roads lead to Home
