THE WORLD AT WAR! AS THE BATTLE FOR NEW YORK CITY CONTINUES, A HERO FALLS! All the heroes of the Marvel Comics Universe have assembled, yet this still might not be enough to stop Malekith’s endless war. And the one hero who could turn the tide…is stranded where no one can reach him. With Thor trapped in the land of the Frost Giants and the forces of Earth overwhelmed, Black Panther, Jane Foster and Doctor Strange make a desperate gamble. Valhalla awaits…
It’s time to dive into WAR OF THE REALMS #1. Jason Aaron, of THOR fame, has been setting this event up for several years now. Marvel Comics seems to have gone out of their way to kill enthusiasm with several grifts aimed at fleecing LCSs and readers. Marvel Comics has included far too many tie-in, miniseries and variant cover, all practices stores and customers are fed up with.
Russel Dauterman is the lead artist on War of the Realms. I’ve seen a lot of people raving about the quality of his work, which I agree is good. Russel Dauterman uses a very fine line art style that adds a pleasant aesthetic. Russel Dauterman creates a lot of detail in the books and his layouts are really cool and he utilizes a lot different angles in his panel work. For the most part it works really well. Matthew Wilson is on the colors so you know Marvel wants the art to be extra special. He has his hands full with the volume of colorful characters and handles it very well.
I’m skeptical writer Jason Aaron can make good use of the sheer volume of major characters. At least 20 characters spanning the Thor books and Earth based Marvel characters are introduced and it’s very hard to make many of them stand out. Besides the over-stuffed roster the thing that really hold Aaron’s character work back is the amount of lame dialogue and jokes. If you really like MCU style toddler humor you may find this enjoyable but none of it’s to my taste.
For an event as serious as the full on invasion of Midgard, after Maliketh and his Dark Elves have destroyed the other 9 realms, the dialogue is far to campy. There are a few good character moments with Odin, Loki and Thor but they can’t compensate for Jason Aaron’s tone deaf dialogue and terrible jokes. The story is very simple but epic in scale, as it should be. There are a few unexpected deaths and when the dialogue isn’t cringy, the story is a very fun read.
