In this special report, I revisit the questioning, arrest, and pretrial detention of Candide Azannaï, former Minister of National Defense and president of the Restore Hope party.
Arrested on December 12, 2025, and then remanded in custody by the Special Criminal Court (CRIET) on the night of December 19-20, Candide Azannaï has since been held in the Missérété Civil Prison, without any official statement clearly establishing a link between his arrest and the attempted coup of December 7, 2025.
Beyond the individual, this case raises fundamental questions:
– Does pretrial detention respect the principles of necessity and proportionality?
– What space remains for dissenting voices in Benin?
– How can citizens' trust in the judicial institutions be preserved?
In a political context marked by growing tensions between the executive branch and the opposition, this analysis aims to be factual, legal, and civic-minded, strictly respecting the presumption of innocence and the principles of the rule of law.
