This is a video showing two different but similar play development games that we utilize when preparing dogs for Detection work.
Our main goal is building intensity, building duration and stamina of intensity and commitment to reward. We are also working on focus and strong desire for the toy and engagement with the handler. We also start communication and collaboration between Handler and dog with some of these games.
There are two different techniques being used here… with one dog who is the older dog, (the black lab named Gamble) we used a more linear play style game, building focus and duration of motivation. We do not have a set number or misses and catches we want… what we want is maintaining motivation even as he tires and also keeping a clear head during these games.
The second part of the video is with a young nine month old spaniel named Ranger. With Ranger our focus is just a fun building pursuit and catch using a toy on a flirt pole, building motivation, and intensity for a toy. In this case the toy is very soft simply due to the fact that he just got his adult teeth in and we’re not looking to create any potential problems with biting something harder at this moment. Later he will also use whatever toy is best for him and Detection most likely a talk toy or a ball on a string.
For some trainers the direction of movement of the toy serves a purpose, and for us, it does as well, but the direction sometimes can mean simply following it no matter which way we go whether it’s in circles or in a linear pattern and other cases we use a linear pattern for the very deliberate reason of pursuit and focus.
