This is a beautiful trail at the edge of Peak District National Park, taking you through the Chee Dale Gorge, a deep, picturesque gorge in the Upper Wye Valley.
Being much more than a simple riverside stroll, this route involves stepping stones, narrow and rocky paths, and overhanging cliffs. Please note that at times when the water level is particularly high, these stones may be flooded. Exercise caution and turn around if needed.
This trail starts at the Top Pike Layby on the A6. As you set off, you’ll pass an information board marking the entry into Chee Dale Nature Reserve.
The path leads you downhill to the Chee Dale Gorge, crossing the Monsal Trail and passing a tearoom at Blackwell Mill.
Cross the River Wye to follow a rocky riverside path through the gorge. As you make your way along, there are steep limestone cliffs along the waterside, with a narrow path of stepping stones leading you along the edge of the river under the overhanging cliff.
Cross the river via a wooden footbridge a little further on, after which the path ascends slightly. Pass underneath an arch and cross the river again. This is followed by stepping stones along the riverside once more.
Continue further along the river before turning around and following the same route back again.
