The first installment of the Hive’s “How To” video series! Did you know we have a vinyl cutter? Madame Vinyl Cutter is located on the back table in the Toolbox. This video will help you use the vinyl cutter to create designs with your smart phone. Share your creations, successful or not, with us by sending a picture to [email protected]—we’d love to see it :)
STEP 1: TURN IT ON!
STEP 2: DOWNLOAD THE APP
The app is available for both iOS and Android devices!
STEP 3: USE THE APP TO MAKE A DESIGN. You can use their free templates, fonts, & shapes—edit to your fancy!
Check out the “Free This Week” category for fun and interesting templates to use!
Use both fingers to readjust the workspace and find the spot you’d like to place your design.
Rotate, resize, lock, or delete objects using the icons that appear when you tap them.
Play around with the bottom menu to add details to your design. Add text, shapes, & more!
STEP 3a: CHOOSE WHETHER YOU'D LIKE EACH COMPONENT WRITTEN OR CUT!
STEP 4: PICK, MEASURE, & CUT YOUR (PAPER) POISON TO MATCH YOUR PREFERENCE
Measure out how much of each material you would like to use based on the desired size of your design.
Reference the ruler on the mat to position the material where you would like to print it.
This is especially important if you're using multiple. I'm using two—vinyl and paper.
Later, you’ll have a chance to match this positioning with your positioning in the phone app before printing.
To secure the material to the mat, use a light amount of the spray adhesive found in the Toolbox.
STEP 5: SEND TO MAT! (This doesn’t print yet…) Arrange designs based on where you want to cut/write what
The app creates a mat for each object in your design so you can print them one at a time.
Even after you send to mat, you can still go back to make edits to your design!
NOTE: if you’re a goof like me & went back to fix your design, just click “REPLACE” to send your new design to the cutter.
Move each object into the location on the mat where you placed the material you’d like to print on (this is your chance!).
STEP 6: CONNECT TO BLUETOOTH—“CricutAir-125D”
STEP 7: ADJUST THE KNOB TO SUIT WHICH SURFACE YOU'RE PRINTING ON & GO!
For objects you’ve chosen to “write,” use the pen.
Be sure to return the space to “fresh and new” for the next person!

WHAT IS THE HIVE?
The Rick and Susan Sontag Center for Collaborative Creativity, aka the Hive, is a resource for the Claremont Colleges. We give the 5C community space and tools to generate, experiment, and play.
WHAT DO YOU DO THERE?
Try things, learn skills, make friends, and create. This can range from workshops on using the loop pedal to meetings organizing activist campaigns. All are welcome, and all activities support the creative development of members of our community.
