Teenagers are being exposed to harmful material within minutes of joining social media platforms, despite recent laws designed to strengthen protections.
Research shows that 15-year-olds who created accounts on Instagram or TikTok were quickly served racist, misogynistic, or violent content in their feeds—without searching for it or agreeing to view it.
In one case, a teenager encountered a video depicting a man drugging and abducting a woman just eight minutes after opening a TikTok account.
The study, conducted by online safety charity The Cybersmile Foundation, also found that adults were shown similar content in as little as 16 seconds.
