Ramboda Falls
Ramboda Falls, located in the Ramboda Pass of Pussellawa in the Nuwara Eliya District, is one of Sri Lanka’s most striking waterfalls. Standing at about 109 meters (358 feet) high and at an elevation of 945 meters (3,100 feet) above sea level, it is the 11th tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka and ranks among the tallest in the world. Formed by the Panna Oya, a tributary of the Kotmale Oya, Ramboda is a tiered waterfall with two main drops.
Viewing & Access
Ramboda Falls is divided into upper, middle, and lower sections.
Some parts are visible directly from the A5 highway that connects Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
The lower section provides the most complete view, but it usually requires climbing down near the Ramboda Bridge or following footpaths.
Excellent viewpoints can also be found around the Ramboda Falls Hotel and nearby areas.
Surroundings
The falls are surrounded by misty hills, tea plantations, and lush greenery. The humid climate supports mosses, ferns, and other rich vegetation. At the base of the waterfall, a natural pool forms, though bathing here should be done with caution depending on the water flow. Ramboda Falls is a favorite stop for travelers between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, offering a refreshing break in the cool mountain climate.
Lower Ramboda Falls
The Lower Ramboda Falls, also called Pahala Ramboda Ella, is about 15 meters high and lies 500 meters below the middle section. Unlike the upper and middle falls, it is not visible from the main road. To reach it, visitors can take a footpath near Ramboda Falls Hotel that leads downhill, sometimes through hotel gardens. The best views are from the hotel area or by walking the path down. Due to its hidden location, the lower falls are less crowded, creating a quieter and more peaceful experience compared to the other sections.
Ramboda Road Tunnel
When you travel along the A5 highway, near the famous Ramboda Falls, you’ll come across one of the most unique landmarks in Sri Lanka — the Ramboda Tunnel. Since Sri Lanka has only a handful of road tunnels, passing through this one is a special and memorable experience for many travelers.
The Ramboda Tunnel is the longest tunnel in Sri Lanka, measuring 225 meters in length, 7 meters wide, and 5.6 meters high. Driving through it can be both exciting and slightly eerie, as the dim lights and narrow space give a thrilling sense of adventure. For those who are claustrophobic, the relief of seeing the light at the other end feels even more rewarding!
Important note: Walking through the tunnel is strictly prohibited, as vehicles travel fast inside, making it dangerous for pedestrians.
Construction of the Ramboda Tunnel started in 2006 and was completed in 2008, with significant funding support from the Japanese government. The project cost around Rs. 2,000 million.
The tunnel is so iconic that in 2011, it was even featured on the Sri Lankan 1,000 rupee banknote. Today, it remains not just an engineering feat but also a popular attraction for anyone traveling through the central highlands.
Devathura Ella Falls / Thewathura Ella
Height: 10 meters
District: Nuwara Eliya
Formerly known as ‘Thevatura Falls’ or Tea Waterfall, Devathura Ella cascades from the Peratas Tea Estate and factory above. The waterfall flows over several rock platforms, though only a 10-meter section is visible from the road, eventually feeding into the Kotmale Reservoir.
The area around the falls is lush with flora and fauna, including Erythrina indica (erebadu), creating a peaceful and scenic setting that attracts many visitors.
Devathura Ella is located just before the new Ramboda Tunnel. Nearby, the old Nuwara Eliya road, once used before the tunnel was built, offers a glimpse of history. Although now narrow and no longer open to vehicles, a short 20-meter walk along this road reveals rocks that were cut during the British colonial period to create the roadway.
